Institution of the Rosary Window: Detail, St. Bernard and the Salve Regina

As usual, the saint is shown writing in a book and wearing the white Cistercian habit. The words he is writing appear to be SALVE REGINA, the title of the 12th-century antiphon whose words appear on the scroll. St. Bernard did not write the antiphon, but he was an enthusiastic promoter of Marian devotion. In the window as a whole (see below), his upward gaze at the Virgin echoes that of St. Dominic.

The words in the white circle are St. Bernardus doctor mellifluus.
